Eye care for children and young adults

Eye injury due to trauma are common. 30% of accidents are related to sports, recreational activities and at home. Part of the accidents occur in those younger than 16 years of age. One thing of concern is that most of these accidents are preventable.

Parents should be aware of the possible dangers in the home and school environments. They should advise their children to use suitable eye protection gear when playing sports.

Eye care at home

The majority of home eye injuries are caused by home appliances, usually due to inadequate supervision from adults. Parents should choose age-appropriate toys for their children. Adult supervision is necessary when children are using dangerous items e.g. pencils, scissors, forks, knives, BB-guns and air guns. Even seemly safe objects e.g. paperclips, rubber bands and clothes hangers can cause serious eye injuries.

Parents should store chemicals, aerosols, explosives and fireworks out of reach from children.

Eye care at school

When participating in science experiments, children should wear protective goggles.

Sports

Eye injury usually occurs in contact sports and ball games. There are many different types of eye protection for these sports.

When children participate in these contact sports or ball games, they should wear proper protective goggles made of polycarbonate or even face shields.

If a child already has permanent visual loss of one eye, parents should seriously consider whether the child should avoid high-risk activities. For enquiries, please contact an ophthalmologist.

Contact lenses are not protective. Therefore, protective eye wear should be used.

General eye care advice

If the child has only one functional eye, he/she should use full-time protective eye wear made of polycarbonate with sturdy frames, irrespective of whether they need glasses or not. The central thickness of the lens should be at least 2mm (daily use), or at least 3mm (sports). These protective glasses can also have prescription added.

Accidents

In the case of eye injuries, please seek medical attention immediately as some serious eye injuries may not be immediately apparent to parents.
