Dry Eye Day 2011
Dry Eye Day – 《眼乾有良方》醫學講座 was successfully held on 3rd April 2011 at Langham Place in conjunction with the College of Ophthalmologists of Hong Kong. With 50 medical students, 20 ophthalmologists (from QMH, PWH, HKEH, UCH, CMC, TMH, HKU), 4 nurses (from HKEH) as volunteers, the entire program went smoothly.
Undersecretary for Food and Health Professor Gabriel Leung officiated the opening ceremony as Guest of Honor, while celebrities 狄易達, Eddie@EO2 and 陳凱欣 promoted the importance of eye care. Our opening ceremony and program was attended by numerous media, including NowTV, CableTV, TVB, ATV, Roadshow, 太陽報, 成報, 東方日報.
The program, which included lecture series on Dry Eye Syndrome, OSDIc survey on iPads, Schirmer tests, and educational poster exhibition, was very well-received, with over 400 attendances. The iPads were especially popular and interesting to the public and the reporters, and 250 participants from the public took part in the survey. Of those participants, more than 70 scored high on OSDIc and underwent Schirmer's test under topical anesthesia. None of the participants had any complications or side effects from the tests. They were given information regarding their conditions and advised to seek help from ophthalmologists.
Speakers for the eight lectures on Dry Eye Syndrome included ophthalmologists from the public hospitals as well as the private sector. A senior rheumatologist was also invited to give a talk on Sjogren Syndrome and autoimmune diseases. We also had arranged special patient groups, such as 康青會, 角膜關懷協會, 香港 強脊會 to attend some of the lectures and screening. Overall, the lecture area was filled with people throughout the afternoon, owing to the excellent crowd control by our Organizing Committee members.
