會長的話

Dear Colleagues, Members, and Friends of the Hong Kong Ophthalmological Society,

I am deeply honoured to serve as President of the Hong Kong Ophthalmological Society, and I sincerely thank you for the confidence you have placed in me. I accept this role with a strong sense of responsibility and dedication to our profession and our community.

Our Society stands on an exceptional foundation built over more than 70 years by dedicated and visionary leaders. I wish to express my heartfelt appreciation to all Past Presidents for their enduring contributions. In particular, I would like to thank our Immediate Past President, Dr. Emmy Li, for her exemplary leadership, tireless dedication, and steady stewardship. Under her guidance, the Society has emerged stronger, more cohesive, and well positioned for future growth.

The mission of the Hong Kong Ophthalmological Society has always been clear: to uphold the highest standards of professional training and education, to serve the community through public education and outreach, and to foster a collegial, supportive, and connected professional community. These core principles will continue to guide our direction and priorities.

Looking ahead, my term will be guided by four key focus areas.

First, strengthening engagement, development, and mentorship for our younger members.
The future of ophthalmology in Hong Kong depends on the growth and leadership of our residents, fellows, and early-career ophthalmologists. Beyond encouraging active participation in Society activities and committees, we will place strong emphasis on the establishment and enhancement of structured mentorship programmes. These initiatives will aim to connect junior members with experienced clinicians and academic leaders, supporting career development, subspecialty training, research growth, and professional well-being. By nurturing talent and cultivating future leaders, we ensure the long-term vitality and excellence of the Society.

Second, enhancing public education and community outreach through digital innovation.
Public education has always been a core mission of the Hong Kong Ophthalmological Society. To broaden our reach and modernize our engagement with the community, we will develop an official HKOS YouTube channel dedicated to eye health education. This platform will deliver accurate, accessible, and professionally endorsed information on common eye diseases, preventive care, and vision health, thereby strengthening public awareness, combating misinformation, and reinforcing the Society’s role as a trusted authority in eye care.

Third, deepening strategic partnerships with professional bodies and non-governmental organizations.
Collaboration is essential for advancing ophthalmic care, education, and advocacy. We will actively strengthen partnerships at both national and local levels. At the national level, we will further enhance our collaboration with the Chinese Ophthalmological Society, promoting academic exchange and regional cooperation. Locally, we will work closely with key professional bodies, including the College of Ophthalmologists of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Association of Private Eye Surgeons, and our subspecialty organizations, such as Hong Kong Vitreoretinal Society, Hong Kong Glaucoma Society, Hong Kong Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Society, and the Hong Kong Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. In parallel, we will deepen collaboration with valued partners and NGOs etc., to enhance community service, training, and eye care outreach.

Fourth, delivering a landmark Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Congress in 2026.
A major strategic priority of our term will be the successful hosting of the 2026 APAO Congress in Hong Kong, one of the most important international events in ophthalmology. We anticipate welcoming over 10,000 delegates from more than 100 countries, providing an unparalleled platform to showcase Hong Kong’s clinical excellence, research innovation, and organizational capability. This Congress will foster global academic exchange, strengthen regional and international collaborations, and further consolidate Hong Kong’s position as a leading hub for ophthalmology, particularly in strengthening ties across the Asia-Pacific region and mainland China.

The continued success of the Hong Kong Ophthalmological Society depends on the collective efforts of all our members, across generations, subspecialties, and practice settings. By working together, we can strengthen our Society, advance eye care standards, and better serve the people of Hong Kong.

I look forward to working closely with each of you in the years ahead, and I am confident that together we will build upon our proud legacy and shape an even stronger future for our profession.

With sincere thanks and best regards,

Prof. Jason C. Yam
President
Hong Kong Ophthalmological Society
